MEDICAL EDUCATION - POSTGRADUATE
Dr Hill has been a trainer with the Post Graduate training program in general practice in Cork since 2002. This program was the first postgraduate training program in General Practice in Ireland and continues to lead the way in medical education. We are delighted to be one of only 24 GP practices in Cork City and County to be selected for this important and prestigious role.
For the practice this involves having a GP Registrar affiliated to the practice for a year at a time. These are highly qualified doctors with many years of hospital training prior to joining the practice. They bring to the practice
In turn the practice commits to giving protected educational time with the registrar for the following
For the practice this involves having a GP Registrar affiliated to the practice for a year at a time. These are highly qualified doctors with many years of hospital training prior to joining the practice. They bring to the practice
- the most recent advances in hospital medicine
- knowledge of changes in hospital structures and systems
- in depth clinical knowledge ( as they have several examinations to complete during their post-grad training)
- a fresh perspective
- time - to consider patients problems in depth as this is an integral part of their training
In turn the practice commits to giving protected educational time with the registrar for the following
- In depth review of patient consultations including video consultations
- Clinical topic tutorials on a twice weekly basis (this ensures that all doctors are continually kept up to date)
MEDICAL EDUCATION - UNDERGRADUATE
We are proud to be involved with the training and education of medical students and we are actively involved with training second and final year medical students from UCC. We have 10 students from UCC doing a family attachment every year and 2 final year students at a time working on a 4 week rotation in our General Practice throughout the academic year.
This works as a two way learning experience, as it provides the students with a valuable and practical insight into Primary care, while our doctors , through involvement with the students in tutorials and clinical audits, maintain and enhance their own knowledge. Each GP has a student sitting in with them for consultations, but patients are always given the opportunity to request a consultation with the doctor alone if they would prefer. However we do ask people to remember that the quality of the patient service provided by the health service going forward can only be maintained and improved by training, teaching, audits and research, all of which we facilitate by allowing students to participate in all aspects of general practice including consultations. We would like to reassure you that all members of staff including our students are governed by an ethic of privacy and confidentiality. Activities of the GP Attachment
Students participate in a range of activities during their general practice attachment with us.
The activities they undertake during the attachment include the following:-
- Observation of consultations between GPs or nurses and their patients.
- Consultations with patients and/ or their carers under the supervision of a GP
- Carrying out clinical procedures under supervision.
- Tutorials.
- Feedback/ report back sessions.
- Audit/ quality review project.
Learning to be a good doctor means spending time with patients and the health care professionals who work with them. We aim to provide our students with the opportunity to do this in a general practice setting, and we would like to thank all our patients who have assisted us with this.
